How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Your Room

The right rug size pulls a room together. Too small and the room feels disconnected. Too large and the floor disappears. Here's a simple way to choose between our most popular sizes.

Measure first

Measure the floor area you want to cover and mark it with tape or newspaper. Leave a border of bare floor around the rug, typically 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) from the walls in larger rooms.

4 x 6 ft (and 4.6 x 6.6 ft)

Great for smaller spaces: beside a bed, in front of a sofa in a compact living room, in a study, or as an accent in an entryway. It defines a zone without covering the whole floor.

5 x 8 ft (and 5.3 x 7.6 ft)

Our most versatile size. In a living room it sits under the coffee table with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug. In a bedroom it works across the lower two-thirds of a double or queen bed.

8 x 10 ft

Ideal for larger living rooms and dining areas. It's big enough to hold the front legs of all your seating, or a dining table with the chairs still on the rug when pulled out.
